The Certificate Program
The high standards of The Royal Conservatory curriculum are made available to American students through the National Music Certificate Program Examinations Certificate Program. Practical piano and music theory examinations are conducted each year in select communities through a network of examination centers. Each year, more than 100,000 students participate in the internationally recognized Certificate Program.
Founded in 1886, The Royal Conservatory is an independent, self-sustaining, not-for-profit arts organization whose mission is to foster the development of human potential through music and arts education. As one of the largest music education institutions in the world, The Royal Conservatory has produced distinguished and internationally-acclaimed musicians including Glenn Gould, Lois Marshall, Steven Staryk, Teresa Stratas, and Jon Vickers.
The Certificate Program starts with two preparatory levels, suitable for piano students completing their first and second years of study, respectively. The Program then progresses through ten consecutive grades (Grades 1 - 10), and culminates in certification as an Associate of The Royal Conservatory (the ARCT diploma). The examinations available for each level, grade, and certification, serve as logical assessment points for developing musicians.
Practical Examinations
Examinations are intended to be a positive and developmental experience. Practical piano examinations are conducted by members of the College of Examiners in a friendly and professional atmosphere on a one-on-one basis. Practical examinations test a candidate's performance of repertoire, etudes, technique, and level-appropriate sight reading and ear training skills - in other words, a candidate's practical proficiency on the piano.
Each candidate taking a practical examination receives a mark and a written evaluation. The examiner's professional and objective assessment of both strengths and weaknesses is intended to encourage candidates and enhance their continued studies with their teacher.
Theory Examinations
Music theory examinations, designed to complement practical studies, begin at the early grades and are written in a formal classroom setting. Theory requirements ensure a comprehensive knowledge and understanding of rudiments, harmony, counterpoint, analysis, and music history.
Marked theory examination papers are returned to all candidates with their results. This allows teachers to review marked papers with their students in order to ensure a complete learning process before proceeding to the next level.
Certificates
Certificates are awarded at every grade to all candidates who have successfully completed the requirements for practical and theory examinations.
